Dementia Friendly America (DFA)

is a national network of communities, organizations and individuals seeking to ensure that communities across the U.S. are equipped to support people living with dementia and their caregivers. One of their key goals is to increase awareness and understanding of dementia and of people living with dementia. Dementia friendly communities foster the ability of people living with dementia to remain in community and engage and thrive in day-to-day living. They are informed, safe and respectful of individuals living with dementia, their families and caregivers and provide supportive options that foster quality of life.

Sonoma Valley Joins the Dementia Friendly America Network!

CarePartners Initiative and leaders in multiple sectors of the community have received certification from Dementia Friendly America for Sonoma Valley, the first Dementia Friendly community in the North Bay.  We are committed to help remove the stigma surrounding dementia and to make our community informed, safe, and respectful of individuals with memory loss.

Every part of the community works together to take steps to create a dementia friendly culture.

  • Law enforcement and first responders recognize signs of dementia respond accordingly.
  • Health care systems promote early diagnosis and connect individuals with community services.
  • Faith communities are welcoming and have specialized programs, services or accommodations.
  • Businesses and Banking support customers living with dementia by accommodating cognitive impairment.
  • Community members learn how to interact sensitively and create networks of support.
  • Restaurants, grocery stores, and libraries offer services and supports that foster access and independence.
  • Employers support employees who are caregivers through proactive personnel policies.
  • Residential care and community services offer a range of services to maximize independence and support ongoing community engagement.

The Director of Dementia Friendly Sonoma Valley will work to involve all of these organizations and businesses in this important effort.

CarePartners Initiative is also encouraging individuals to become a “Dementia Friend.”
